Traveling While Plant Based and Gluten-Free in Botswana and Zimbabwe

We left Kasane and headed south through the Kalahari Desert. My sister, Annelies recommended the book The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall, which takes place in Botswana. Before we left our lodge at Kasane, we were able to download the audiobook.

It was so much fun to listen to the book while driving through the country where it was based. We saw road signs and drove through villages that were mentioned in the book. What an experience.

Just an elephant grazing by the side of the road. You know, a normal Tuesday in Botswana.
The universal, super sophisticated fix for being on the sunny side of the car during a road trip.
I took my window shade down so I could see an elephant RIGHT OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. No biggie.

And then we came across this huge family of elephants crossing the road.

Watch till the end. The matriarch of the family gave us the stink eye to make sure we don’t follow them.

We stopped at a place called Planet Baobab for one night. As the name suggests, there are many baobab trees in this area. Baobab trees, also known as the Tree of Life, are breathtaking. We saw one that was thought to be 5,000 years old. They grow up to 30 meters (98 feet) tall and the trunk can get up to 40 meters (131 feet) around.

Our hut for the night.
The kitchen was so cool. The sides were open and it had a roof just like the hut where we slept.
Dinner was millet pap, curried cauliflower, and some veggies. Simple and yummy.

I was so lucky on my trip to Africa. We stayed in 3 different lodges and each one provided vegan meals for me! I had brought some items for snacks but rarely needed them. There was always cooked veggies, hot cereal and fruit for breakfast and all kinds of beans and lentils and all kinds of curry. Did you ever pee behind termite mounds? That was our go to hehe

Sounds like an amazing trip, Debra. Molly said they did not pee on any (lol!) but they saw thousands of them! The mounds changed colors as they drove through different regions of the countries. They also saw mounds that were 20 feet tall!
