Dec 20, 2017,
The room was warm and dimly lit. I was sweaty.
The smell in the air was the combination of lavender, sweat, and rubber.
My heavy breathing started to slow down as I rested from a round of chaturangas, down dogs and forward folds. My muscles were tired and shaky and I was thankful for the short rest. What happened next was unexpected.
A wave of gratitude for my body washed over me like a warm, soothing wave that encompassed my entire being. As I basked in this blanket of thanks, totally present and in awe of my body, the unexpected part happened. And it was magical.
My body thanked me back.
It felt like a warm hug, a gentle squeeze, a knowing, a wink, an understanding. My lips parted into a little smile and tears filled my eyes with acknowledgment. And then, it was time to stand up and start another round.
I’ve heard it said that if you truly love your body, the natural progression of that love is to take good care of your body by feeding it well, avoiding drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, talking nicely to it, and moving it on a regular basis. Start by making the recipe below; a turmeric blackberry smoothie.
And I’m sure that’s how it works for some people. But for me, I didn’t find true love, respect and compassion for my body until AFTER I started taking damn good care of it.
In other words, I didn’t start with love
for my body and then get healthy.
I started with getting healthy and through that process I found love for my body. And that love continues to grow.
And apparently, it’s not a one-way street, because now I know my body loves me as much as I love my body.
Your relationship with your body is unique to you, and there is no one right way to nurture that relationship develop. But it is worth exploring because it’s the most important relationship you will ever have in your life.

Looks yummy! Can I ask if regular turmeric powder/spice works instead of whole root? Just a difficult thing to find around here 🙂
Hi, Katie! The general rule is 1″ fresh = 1 teaspoon powdered. In the case of a smoothie, and not having tested it out, I would think 1/2 teaspoon would suffice. You can always add more to taste.
