Howl with me
Being an adult 100% of the time is a bit excessive.
Last week, I noticed my driver’s license had expired over a month ago, I received a notice in the mail for jury duty, and I was fined by the HOA where I live because my cat was caught outside the perimeter of my yard.
This was way too much adulting for one day, but really, it was just another Wednesday.
Between making sure you have what you need, other people have what they need, there’s enough money to pay for all the things, tending to all the errands and children and admin and pets and appointments and phone calls, while at the same time making sure there’s always toilet paper in the bathroom and a constant supply of healthy food in the fridge? That’s already a job for like four people. And that’s when things are going smoothly! Throw in a complication or two and a big life change, and it can feel like you’re spending your life treading water just trying to keep afloat.
I don’t know about you, but there’s an ancient part of my brain that is begging for less tasks and more dancing.
Less logistics and more stories.
Less technology and more face-to-face connections.
Less screens and more howling under the full moon.
Less routine and more creativity.
Less robot-like and more animal-like.
And then I look at my to-do list, and my ancient brain goes back into its cave as I continue to keep two steps ahead of my life so it doesn’t slide off a cliff. (<----- this is what my brain tells me anyway. The brain can be pretty dramatic.)
But maybe…
Maybe it’s possible to tap into my ancestral line from 300,000 years ago while also getting my ass to the DMV to renew my license.
That could look like:
🌱 More whole foods and fewer processed foods.
✨ Making more choices based on intuition and less on a feeling of obligation.
🌲 Meeting a friend for a walk instead of always texting.
📝 Separating out what “has” to be done and what “should” be done.
🤔 Deciding if you really want to do the things that “should” be done, or if it’s time to let some of those go.
🎶 More listening to music, dancing, and writing poetry, and less time on your phone.
🌌 Less TV and more looking up at the night sky and marveling at where we come from.
🧘 Practicing silence and stillness instead of living in a constant state of distraction.
🍲 Inviting your friends over for a potluck and telling each other stories.
Sadly, my license won‘t renew itself, jury duty is part of life, and HOA rules are ridiculous, but that doesn't mean I can’t cross a few of those “Shoulds” off that crazy long list and make time to howl under the moon while dancing with my friends and honoring the full expression of who we are and where we all came from.
This weekend, go howl. 🌕
