Juice fasting – now THAT is a privileged activity.
Having more than enough money for food and choosing not to eat. My younger broke college self would have scoffed at the idea of going on a juice fast.
But then again, my younger self always managed to find money for multiple Jager shots and Guinness pints, so she can shut the hell up. My younger self is one of the reasons why juice fasting is important for me to partake in- bless her drunk heart!
It might be a privilege to go on a juice fast, but the benefits of doing it a couple times a year will also save you Benjamins in the future – as in cash money in the bank.
Putting lots of organic produce into your body will always be less expensive than going to the doctor. Word to your mom.
There are oodles of reasons to go on a juice fast and only a few reasons not to. The reasons not to don’t outweigh the reasons to go for it though, because it’s stupid shit like:
- Not being able to eat food is annoying.
- Cleaning up the juicer sucks.
- Looking at food porn sites like Foodgawker and Instgram will make you cry.
These are all facts, but they’re not worth denying yourself the benefits of totally cleaning out your system a couple times per year.
Here are three of the most inspiring reasons to try out a juice fast.
Let the fuckery begin.
ONE: You say toxins, I say Berkeley flashback.
One of the most popular reasons to endure a juice fast is because it releases built up toxins in the body. A toxin is basically a substance that causes abrupt or eventual harm to the body. There are lots of places we collect toxins from:
- Crappy processed food (vegan or not)
- Hormone and antibiotic filled meat and dairy
- Soft drinks
- Carbon monoxide
- First or second hand smoke
- Household cleaners that aren’t natural
- Pesticides in the air and on non-organic produce
- Most plastics
- Ingredients in a lot of health and beauty products
- Ingredients in a lot vitamins and supplements (another reason to ditch them)
Now, let’s not get it twisted, the human body is rad as fuck, and we’re built to filter out and release toxins as they come into the body.
It’s kind of like throwing a house party and kicking out the zombies as soon as they’ve been spotted. Our body knows what ghouls aren’t good for us and it reacts accordingly.
Toxins become a problem when there are too many of them for the body to keep up with and they start to pile up.
One or two zombies might be manageable, but a whole fucking army of them will do some major damage.
The trick to making sure that toxins aren’t piled up like an apocalyptic zombie fest is to not over-tax the digestive system.
Our digestive system is an intricate self-regulating machine made up of lots of parts. When we eat, it works on digesting our food and when we don’t eat it works on eliminating toxins from our system.
Healthy, unprocessed whole plant foods are easy to digest. Everything else, especially processed and animal based foods, take more work to break down and distribute accordingly.
So if we eat a healthy plant based diet, we’re not going to have an excess of stored toxins because the digestive system is able to quickly and efficiently digest the healthy food and then switch roles and get to work cleaning out any gunked up toxins that we might have hanging out, making an ass of themselves.
By contrast, if the diet is made up of lots of animal and processed foods, the digestive system will spend most of its time working on digesting these foods, and it’ll have to call in sick to its other job over at the toxic clean up factory.
This sucks, because that means a pissed off boss in the form of toxins making us sick, lethargic and unhappy.
At the end of the long hungry day, juice fasts give our digestive system a break from digesting food, freeing it up to clean out built up toxins, all while flooding our body with vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.
And even if you eat a really healthy plant based diet, keep in mind the environmental toxins that we don’t have total control over. Eating healthy is the best way to manage toxins, but a 5-10 day juice fast keeps everything in check.
TWO: Calibration isn’t just for scales or ovens.
If you’re trying to cut sugar, processed foods, meat, dairy, alcohol, coffee or cigarettes out of your life, a 5-10 day juice fast is the perfect place to start.
When drinking only fruits and veggies for many days in a row, your taste buds and habits have a chance to reset, and you tend to lose your taste for certain things that you used to love.
Case in point:
Luanne loves to have a cup of coffee every morning. After our first juice fast a few years back, she decided to have a cup of coffee two days after the fast ended.
She was so excited to take that first sip, but as soon as she did, she literally spit it out because it tasted like metallic acid in her mouth. Nothing about the coffee had changed; it was her taste buds that were different.
It took her a few weeks before she could drink coffee again. If she was trying to kick her coffee habit, this would have been the perfect time to do it because the coffee was totally out of her system, she had broken the habit of her morning coffee routine, and the taste was no longer pleasurable.
When our taste buds and body aren’t bombarded with lots of salt, sugar, fat and other stimulants, we go back to our pure state of enjoying, craving and getting extreme pleasure from really simple healthy foods.
If there are certain foods or substances that you want to quit, a juice fast is the most efficient way to get a really quick jumpstart on easily kicking them out of your life for good.
THREE: Flood that bod with nutrients and it will love you long time.
Let’s say you come over to my house for breakfast one morning. You knock on my door and I let you in. I introduce you to my cat, Panda and then show you to the dining table.
I tell you to make yourself comfortable while I put the finishing touches on breakfast. Five minutes later I come back and put this in front of you:
- one cucumber
- two carrots
- three collard leaves
- four celery stalks
- one lime
- one granny smith apple
- a big chunk of turmeric
- one bunch of fresh parsley
It’s all just staring up at you in it’s raw form, and I’m smiling, waiting for you to dive in. You look up at me like I’m insane and you book it for the door, not even saying bye to Panda on your way out.
Now, imagine if I asked you over to my house for a fresh pressed green juice and I presented you with a tall glass of those same ingredients, but in liquid form. Not so crazy, right? In fact, I guarantee you would Instagram that shit, tag Gwyneth Paltrow and drink up.
What I’m getting at here is that when we make fresh green juice and green smoothies, we get way more veggies and fruits in our system than we otherwise would.
And the more veggies and fruits we eat, the more vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and bad ass phytochemicals we have moving through our system. And when we have these guys up to bat for us they will strengthen our immune system, fight free radicals (which gives us flawless skin), give us crazy high amounts of energy, and keep our overall health in check.
So here’s the thing. Even though I eat really healthy, I decided to go on a quick 5 day juice fast recently (which doesn’t feel fucking fast when you’re on it).
I decided to do this for a several reasons:
- My life was feeling monotonous and I wanted to change things up. I wanted a challenge and juice fasts are not a walk in the park.
- There are a couple of habits that I want to drop, and I knew this would give me the kickstart I needed.
- I felt a little nudge from my intuition telling me to clean house.
I recruited Luanne to do it with me and we decided on a 10 day juice / smoothie fast. An hour later we changed our minds and decided on 5 days. Because EATING FOOD IS BOSS.
I kept a candid journal during my 5 day fast and then I put it in an ebook along with everything I know about juice fasting that I wish I had known the first time I fasted.
My new ebook is designed to help get you through your juice fast as easy as humanly possible.
Fangs are for vampires, not for nice people like you.

I’m super stoked to share my new ebook with you. It’s one of my love children, what can I say?
Today’s recipe is for a super yummy juice. It’ll convince you that drinking veggies isn’t gross.
Cleansing Celery Turmeric Juice
Cleansing Celery Turmeric Juice
- 5 celery stalks
- 3 carrots
- 1 1/2 cucumbers
- 2 granny smith apples
- a couple large handfuls of leafy greens 5 leaves or so
- 1 lime peeled
- 1 thumb size piece of turmeric
- 1 thumb size piece of ginger
Wash your produce and juice away.
Add the cucumber last because it has the most water content and it will flush out the juicer.
If you want to make your juice in the morning and you're short on time, wash all the ingredients and then place them in a container in the fridge. The next morning, whip out your juice kit and start juicing.
This might make the difference between being able to make your juice before you go off to work or saying fuck it, speeding out the door and driving through Starbucks (This is one of many tips you will find in my new book).
I hope you have a happy week. May it be filled with doing stuff that your younger self would scoff at.
P.S. – I feel on top of the world after my fast on so many levels. I feel more alive, present, focused, content, happy and inspired than I have in a long time. And it’s not like I was depressed or down to begin with! It was exactly what I needed at just the right time – as life so often arranges for us.
If you know someone who’s been talking about doing a juice fast, will you share this link and tell them you found the perfect thing for them? You’re a peach!
