11 Things to Remember When You’re Crying Because Life Sucks + Calming Turmeric Mung Bean Soup

Sometimes, life just sucks. We’ve all been there. Here are some reminders when it sucks for you.
1: You will be okay. You will. It might not feel like it right now. It might feel like a miniature goat has entered your stomach and started breakdancing. It might feel like there is no possible solution to your problem. It might feel like the very life you have built is crumbling down around you, kind of like the bean burgers you tried to make before you found CFDG. It might feel like you have been transported to an alternate reality where you are merely an observer of your life. It might feel like all these things. And yet, you will be okay. You will.
2: Sometimes life moves at the speed of lesbians moving in together and sometimes it moves slow, like sweet, sticky molasses. Either way, it moves. Time goes by. Things change. People change. You change. Time marches on. And time is more than medicine, time is the building block upon which strength is born. And time is your birthright.
3: Being thorough goes a long way. If you have a contract to sign, read every single word. If it’s time for deep life work, let your ENTIRE heart lead the way. If it’s time to walk away, do it with all your might and don’t look back. Batch cook your meal plan from start to finish. Pick up the book you KNOW is going to help you, and read it until the end. Dot your i’s and cross your t’s. Be prepared. Be thorough. Life will reward you for it.
4: That problem you’re currently experiencing? The one that hurts and stings and is RIGHT THERE ALL THE TIME? Yeah, that’s a hot damn blessing dressed up as a shit show. You might not see it right now, but hard shit doesn’t happen for the fuck of it. Hard shit happens because life is giving you an opportunity to learn and grow and stretch and change and become an even more kick-ass version of yourself. And if the same problem keeps coming up, over and over and over again, lucky you! This is life, giving you do-overs until you finally get what you need to get, move on, and stop repeating stuff that hurts you.
5: This life you’re living, this is YOUR life. You might be married. You might have kids. You might be single. You might be on a break. You might have a thousand friends. You might have two friends. It doesn’t matter. You have to take care of yourself, first and foremost. Everyone else can get in line. The hard time that you’re going through right now is your sacred time, so use it wisely. Set up your sanctuary. Sleep well. Make an alter. Eat nourishing food. Light some candles. Make your nest. Drink some tea. Meditate. Write. Take a bath. Hydrate. Move your body. And whatever you do, stay away from destructive behavior and toxic people. You have everything it takes to get through this; help yourself by doing the things that support and uplift your body, mind and soul.
6: A container of organic blueberries can be every bit as comforting as chocolate. But if you really want chocolate, buy the good stuff and enjoy every bite.
7: Those thoughts that are constantly running a 5k through your head, are just that. Thoughts. They aren’t reality. Most of the time, they aren’t even true. They are trying to make sense of something that might not make sense. They are trying to control a situation that you have no control over. So change the channel, allow your thoughts to move on. Focus on whatever is in front of you right now. Stop letting your mind drag you around with coulda’, shoulda’, wouldas. Witness your thoughts, but don’t give them power over you. If you can do something to help your situation, do it. If not, let it go. It’s not yours. Even if your thoughts resist that truth.
8: You are an extraordinary human. Don’t let anyone, including yourself, tell you differently. You are worthy of authentic, real love from yourself and from others and the world needs you.
9: Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. See point #4. And remember this: the wall that feels like it’s fast approaching is only scary upon approach. Once you hit the wall you will see that it isn’t the cold, hard, unwelcoming surface you pictured. It’s actually kind of soft, and once you are through, everything will be so crystal clear that you couldn’t possibly go back to how things were.

11: If time is the building block upon which strength is born, then gratitude is the fuel that gets you there. When your whole world feels like it’s falling to pieces and it’s taking you down with it, gratitude will break the fall. When you feel panicked and filled with anxiety, say out loud three things you are grateful for. Then close your eyes, hold those three things in your mind and in your heart, and breathe.
Gratitude is the magic potion that dissolves negativity and fear into light and love. Every. Single. Time.
Whatever you’re going through right now, you are not alone, and you are going to be okay. You are going to be MORE than okay. If you’re not convinced of that right now, place your trust in the universe until you do.

Ingredients
Instant Pot Ingredients
- ¼ cup chopped red onion (40g)
- 2 large garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon peeled and finely chopped ginger
- ¼ cup sliced green onion (20g / 2 green onions / white and green parts, discard root)
- 1 medium-sized tomato, chopped (about 1/2 cup / 100g)
- 2 celery stalks, chopped (about 1 cup / 120g)
- 3 small leeks or 1 large leek, sliced (about 1/2 cup / 60g)
- 1 large carrot, chopped (about 1 cup / 150g)
- 2 cups chopped red cabbage (200g)
- ½ cup whole, green dried mung beans, rinsed (125g)
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper (about 10 turns)
- 3 cups water (710ml)
- ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley (5g)
- 2 teaspoons ume plum vinegar
Stove Top Ingredients
- ¼ cup chopped red onion (40g)
- 2 large large garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon peeled and finely chopped ginger
- ¼ cup sliced green onion (20g / 2 green onions / white and green parts, discard root)
- 1 medium-sized tomato, chopped (about 1/2 cup / 100g)
- 2 celery stalks, chopped (about 1/2 cup / 75g)
- 3 small leeks or 1 large leek, sliced (about 1/2 cup / 60g)
- 1 large carrot, chopped (about 1 cup / 150g)
- 2 cups chopped red cabbage (200g)
- ½ cup whole, green dried mung beans, rinsed (100g)
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper (about 10 turns)
- 6 cups water (1.5 liter)
- ¼ cup parsley, chopped (5g)
- 2 teaspoons ume plum vinegar
Instructions
Instant Pot Instructions
- Prep and measure out all of the ingredients.
- When everything is measured out, press the saute button on your Instant Pot and let the inner pot heat up for 2 minutes. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, green onion, tomato, celery, leeks, carrot, red cabbage, mung beans, turmeric, salt, and pepper (feel free to add any random bits of veggies that you have in your fridge that need to be used up).
- Saute for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add just a splash of water if things start to stick to the bottom of the pot. Turn off the pot and add the water. Stir one more time and lock the lid into place, making sure the nozzle is in the sealing position.
- Set the timer for 15 minutes, using the manual setting. When the timer goes off use the natural release method. When all of the pressure is out of the pot, take off the lid and add the parsley and ume plum vinegar.
Stove Top Instructions
- Prep and measure out all of the ingredients.
- When everything is measured out, heat a large pot over medium heat for 2 minutes. Add the onion, garlic, ginger, green onion, tomato, celery, leeks, carrot, red cabbage, mung beans, turmeric, salt and pepper (feel free to add any random bits of veggies that you have in your fridge that need to be used).
- Saute for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add just a splash of water if things start to stick to the bottom of the pot.
- Add the water and stir again. Bring to a boil, turn down the heat and place a lid on the pot at an angle. Simmer for 25 – 30 minutes, until the veggies and mung beans are soft.
- Take off the lid and add the parsley and ume plum vinegar.
